A group of sports journalists traveling from Anambra State to Uyo, Akwa Ibom, for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria and Libya were abducted on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The journalists were on their way to cover the highly anticipated football match when their vehicle was intercepted by gunmen along the route.
The journalists were traveling in a bus through Iseke, around the Ihiala area of Anambra, when they were kidnapped. The gunmen forced the journalists into a nearby bush; there were approximately 11 journalists in the group.
However, a joint security operation was launched to rescue the journalists following the abduction. Six members of the group were successfully rescued by security operatives on Thursday. Unfortunately, one journalist is feared dead, and four others remain in captivity.
The incident highlights the risks faced by journalists covering sporting events in Nigeria. The police authorities in Anambra have confirmed the incident and are working to rescue the remaining journalists.
