Lagos Police Debunks Theft Allegation Against Officer, Arrests 13 Over Mob Attack
The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims circulating in a viral video alleging that a police inspector stole from a resident and was subsequently beaten by a mob.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 11, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi, described the allegation as false, noting that the officer involved is attached to the Lagos State Taskforce and was performing his lawful duties at the time of the incident.
According to the statement, the inspector was enforcing the state government’s prohibition on indiscriminate parking along Brown Street in Oshodi when he stopped a motorist attempting to park illegally. The motorist reportedly became aggressive, escalating the encounter.
During the confrontation, the inspector unintentionally fired shots into the ground, and debris from the impact struck nearby pedestrians. SP Adebisi said the incident triggered a mob reaction, during which the officer was severely assaulted.
She added that the inspector is currently facing disciplinary measures for his “unprofessional conduct,” in line with police procedures.
The Command also confirmed the arrest of 13 individuals identified in the viral video for their involvement in the assault. The suspects are in custody and will be charged after investigations are concluded. Their names were listed as:
Dele Oriade (39)
Adekunle Olalere (40)
