Troops foil bandits attack in Kano, recover 97 cattle and 50 sheep
Troops of the Joint Task Force Kano have foiled a bandits’ attack and recovered 97 cattle and 50 sheep during an operation along the Yankamaye–Rimaye axis, a border area between Kano and Katsina States.
The troops, deployed at Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) and reinforced by a Response Area team, acted on credible intelligence on 15th July, 2026, at about 5:45 p.m., that armed bandits were moving rustled livestock through the area.
Following the information, troops swiftly positioned themselves at suspected crossing points around Yankamaye and Rimaye, where they intercepted the fleeing bandits. A gun battle ensued, forcing the criminals to abandon the stolen livestock and retreat towards Katsina State in disarray.
At the end of the operation, troops captured two suspected terrorists and recovered one motorcycle, 97 cattle and 50 sheep. The recovered livestock have since been returned to their rightful owners.
However, a local vigilante member, Mallam Yusuf Adamu, 47, from Yanchibi Village, lost his life after being caught in the crossfire during the encounter. The Nigerian Army expressed condolences to his family and the Yanchibi community over the incident.
Troops have continued to dominate the area and are currently pursuing the fleeing bandits.
The Commander, 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, commended the troops for their alertness, professionalism and determination during the operation. He charged them to sustain the ongoing offensive until bandits and other criminal elements operating in the area are completely neutralised.
The Commander also appreciated the support of residents and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, noting that community cooperation remains vital in the fight against criminal activities.
