Women Lawyers Call for Peace Amid Lagos Assembly Crisis.
Amid growing tension following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly by 37 lawmakers, the group “Women Lawyers in Politics” has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other stakeholders to intervene and resolve the crisis amicably.
Speaking during a solidarity visit to the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, in Lagos on Monday, the group's President, Barr. Abimbola Badiya Jack, emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further escalation.
Call for Stability and Support for the New Speaker
Jack expressed concern that the ongoing crisis could destabilize the legislature and create insecurity in the state.
“As women and mothers, we are deeply worried about the lingering crisis and its potential consequences if not properly managed. It could reach a point where we fear for our loved ones' safety,” she cautioned.
She also stressed the importance of a stable and peaceful environment to enable the first female Speaker to effectively carry out her legislative duties.
Acknowledging Lawmakers' Support
The group’s Secretary, Omawunmi Ogungiabi, commended lawmakers who stood by Meranda, describing their support as a milestone for women in leadership.
Deputy Speaker’s Reassurance
In response, Deputy Speaker Fatai Mojeed assured the group that there was no cause for concern, revealing that 39 out of 40 members had agreed to remove the former Speaker.
“There is no need for apprehension. The Assembly remains united, and the matter will be resolved peacefully,” he stated.
The intervention by Women Lawyers in Politics highlights the growing call for stability and reconciliation within the Lagos State legislature.
