5G FLIGHT DISRUPTION SERVICES: FEARS AS US AIRLINES SCRAMBLE TO CANCEL FLIGHTS AMIDST SUCCESS STORIES – THINGS TO KNOW

Amidst fears that 5G cell services could interfere with flight operations, major international airlines are cancelling flights to the United States. The attendant scramble to cancel or reschedule flights to the United States has raised concerns on why the story of 5G deployment in the United States differs from that of EU and France. 


Narrating his ordeal to CNN, the President of Emirates says the airline was not aware of some of the potential 5G rollouts out issues until Wednesday morning as he ascribes to the situation as “one of the most delinquent, utterly irresponsible” he has ever witnessed in the course of his aviation career.


Emirates have cancelled flights to nine US destinations on Wednesday alone,

the President of Emirates stated.


However, the story of 5G deployments in Europe contradicts the fears raised by the United States of catastrophic consequences for aviation and the country if super-fast 5G mobile services expand without additional safeguards.


According to the fears, US airlines alert that 5G cellular antennas located within airport vicinities have the potential to cause safety hazards as they can clash with instruments that assist pilots navigating during low visibility.

Findings however have shown that Europe enjoys uninterrupted business with several high-speed mobile networks deployed successfully without interruptions.


The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) made this known on Wednesday stating that “the technical data received from EU manufacturers offer no conclusive evidence for immediate safety concerns at this time”.


Supporting the claim made by EASA, the regulator, a body that oversees civil aviation in 31 European countries says “At this time, EASA is not aware of any in-service incidents caused by 5G interference.

In a related development, the Civil Aviation Authority in the United Kingdom also issued a safety notice on Tuesday that said “there has been no confirmed interference where 5G interference resulted in aircraft system malfunction or unexpected behaviour. 


Findings show that telecommunication companies in the United States in 2021 paid the sum of $81billion to the government for the right to use C-Band frequencies. With this right, mobile telecommunication companies’ manufacturers produce 5G service in a spectrum of radio waves with frequencies between 3.7 and 3.98GHz. But in Europe, 5G services use a slower 3.4 to 3.8GHz range of the spectrum.

In France, the determination of the proximity of a 5G deployment to the runway and flight path of an aircraft is attributed to the height of the 5G antenna and the power of its signal. The risk of interference is minimized by shifting away antennas around 17 major airports from flight paths, according to the agency’s director of spectrum planning and international affairs.


Therefore France has “no event of 5G technology interfering with aircraft altimeters”, France Civil Authority told CNN.


In essence, the challenge with 5G frequencies in the United States lies in the frequency used in America and not in the deployment of 5G technology.
