AKWA IBOM REJECTS VEHICLES DONATED BY EXXONMOBIL

Akwa Ibom State Government has rejected the ten vehicles donated to it by ExxonMobil to aid contact tracing of suspected COVID-19 patients because there were considered too old and not in good operational conditions.

This was contained in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh, on Sunday, May 17.

According to Udoh, the vehicles donated by ExxonMobil were not roadworthy, overused and can not withstand the rigours of contact tracing.

The statement noted that ExxonMobil had earlier donated, WHO standard RNA COVID-19 test kits for 1,920 tests.

Alongside the donated items were two ambulances and 20 hospital beds, which were also considered below standard.

"The ambulances are converted to buses while the beds are below the standards of those currently in secondary healthcare facilities in the state."

The items were received by Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, Secretary to the State Government, on behalf of the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

The Managing Director of ExxonMobil Companies in Nigeria, Mr Paul McGrath said the firms is working hand in hand with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), as part of the efforts of the oil and gas industry to support the fight against Coronavirus.
