ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT SUSPENDS TRICYCLE, SHUTTLE BUS UNIONS
The Anambra State Government has suspended all unions of Keke and shuttle buses in Anambra State for six months, following conflicts among various persons and entities claiming to be appropriate authority to unionise tricycle and shuttle bus operators.
The Commissioner for Information in the state, Paul Nwosu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday 29 September 2022.
Mr Nwosu added that the directive was also in response to disagreements within the unions where some persons who claimed to be the leaders of the tricycle and shuttle bus operators were rejected by members of the groups.
The state government, in July, announced a new tax regime for transport operators in the state, with tricycle operators required to pay the government a monthly fee of N15,000, while bus drivers were required to pay N25, 000 and commercial motorcyclists, N7,500.
The transport operators protested against the new tax regime.
But on Thursday, the information commissioner said the government has considered the request of the transport operators for a reduction of the tax.
“Tricycle operators now have the option of paying N4000 Weekly Or N15000 Monthly while shuttle buses, Pick-up Trucks are to pay N5000 Weekly or N20000 Monthly. He said
Mr. Nwosu further noted that most of the public transport workers that comply with the directives will have free medical insurance. He further reiterated that the ban on Agbero remain active and therefore urge all the affected individual to register with their various Local Government to enable the government to enroll them in skills that could improve their standard of living.
He concluded that the ban was to restore the breakdown of laws by suspected hoodlums within the State.
