BREAKING: 2 HEALTH OFFICIALS AND 3 OTHERS TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN CROSS RIVER

The Management of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital on Friday, June 3, said 5 persons have tested positive for COVID-19. 


In an internal memo signed by its Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme revealed that the tests were carried out using the PCR Technique at the NCDC Accredited Laboratory located at Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital, Abakiliki.


Prof. Ikpeme said 2 of the COVID-19 patients were members of UCTH. He also said the hospital management has duly informed the Cross River State Government and other agencies of Government.


Staff and patients of the health facility were however told not to panic as COVID-19 is not a death sentence, instead, they should abide by the guidelines on hand and respiratory hygiene as advised by the State and Federal Governments through their various agencies, especially The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

“These staff have since made tremendous progress along the path of recovery and are doing well,” the statement read. 


Since the Coronavirus pandemic hit Nigeria, Cross River state remained the only state with no official record of the disease in its territory. 


The Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar on June 25 revealed that there were indications that the State may not be COVID 19 free. 

 

In the memo, it was revealed that the Rapid test result of a patient in the Hospital tested for Covid-19 came back positive. However, the Cross River Government rebuffed UCTH’s findings, saying the test Rapid Diagnostic test kit used by the Hospital is not reliable.
