BREAKING: SENATE CONFIRMS ABDULRASHEED BAWA AS NEW EFCC CHAIRMAN

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Abdulrasheed Bawa as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The confirmation was a sequel to the screening session that lasted two hours where Bawa was asked questions from over 14 Senators at the Red Chamber.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari on 16th February 2021 asked the Senate to confirm Abdulrasheed Bawa as the Chairman of the EFCC.

The confirmed EFCC boss has however assured that he will discharge his duties without fear or favour and would lead by example.

Bawa, aged 40, who holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy, is presently the Head of Operations of the Commission’s Lagos office.

After his confirmation by the Senate, Bawa is expected to take over from Mohammed Umar Abba, who was appointed as Acting Chairman by President Buhari last year, following the suspension of the immediate past acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.

Recall, Magu was arrested on 6th July 2020 and subsequently suspended as EFCC Acting Chairman following allegations of corruption and money laundering. He was detained for about 10 days before his release, on July 15, Eons Intelligence reports.

Magu is currently being investigated by a panel headed by a former President of the appeal court, Ayo Salami, over allegations of corruption and insubordination levelled against him by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Meanwhile, the former EFCC acting chairman has described all reports over allegations levelled against him as “gross misrepresentation and blatant falsehood,” saying such allegations never featured in the ongoing proceedings probing him.
