IRAN FREIGHTER SHIP DAMAGED BY 'EXPLOSION' IN RED SEA
An Iranian freighter ship on Tuesday suffered a minor damage in an ‘explosion’ in the Red Sea, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
The explosion comes at a crucial time as US President Joe Biden is seeking to resuscitate a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran which was opposed by Israel and abandoned by former President Donald Trump in 2018.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the blast struck the vessel, MV Saviz, off the coast of Djibouti, and noted that an investigation has commenced to ascertain the cause of the explosion.
In a statement by its spokesperson, said no casualties were recorded from the explosion, and that the vessel had been deployed in coordination with the International Maritime Organization to protect shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
It said the ship had been stationed in the Red Sea for several years ‘in support of Iranian commandos deployed to escort commercial vessels’.
