Delta Police Command Arrests Suspected Kidnappers, Armed Robbers, and Cultists; Recovers Cache of Weapons

The Delta State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in its ongoing crackdown on criminal elements across the state. Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, the command arrested several suspects linked to kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities, recovering a large cache of firearms and ammunition in the process.

In a coordinated intelligence-led operation on May 16, 2025, at about 5:45 p.m., operatives of the CP’s Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) dismantled a notorious interstate kidnap syndicate active across Delta, Rivers, Enugu, and Imo States. The team traced and arrested 21-year-old Idirisu Yakubu in Elelenwo, Port Harcourt. He later led officers to the gang leader, Bello Amodu, 40, from Tangaza LGA of Sokoto State, also residing in Elelenwo. A further lead resulted in the arrest of another key suspect, Umar Mohammed Beto, 38, from Bagudu LGA, Kebbi State, who was overseeing operations in Enugu State.

Subsequent interrogation led operatives to a bush along the Ughelli–Ozoro Road, where they recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with 23 rounds of live ammunition and a pump-action gun with seven cartridges. Investigations are ongoing.

In another operation, the Eagle Net Surveillance Team based in Ughelli, acting on credible intelligence, arrested 53-year-old Benjamin Benemor at his residence in Warri South LGA. A search of his home yielded an English Beretta pistol with a magazine, an English double-barrel pump-action gun, an English single-barrel gun, a locally made single-barrel gun, a locally made short double-barrel gun, a battle axe, and 15 live cartridges.

Additionally, on May 15, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m., operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intercepted a Jetta vehicle with registration number ASB18BH during a stop-and-search along the Asaba–Benin Expressway. Two male occupants, 49-year-old Blessing Ngbajime and 27-year-old Okpako Oghenhovo, were apprehended. A fabricated Beretta pistol was found in Okpako’s possession. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and profiling.

CP Abaniwonda Olufemi lauded the professionalism and bravery of the operatives and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to protecting the lives and property of all residents. He stressed the need for continued collaboration with the public and urged citizens to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could aid crime prevention and detection.
