#ENDSARS: FCT BANS PROTESTS DUE TO COVID-19 VIOLATIONS

The Federal Capital Territory Security Committee has banned #EndSARS protests in Abuja, the nation’s capital, for alleged violation of the COVID-19 protocols.

The Committee said it was concerned that despite the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, the protesters continued, causing inconveniences to law-abiding citizens.

For eight days, Nigerians across the country have come out en masse in protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS, who is notorious for police brutality, extortion and unlawful incarceration.

The Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has announced that the SARS unit has been disbanded and would be replaced with Special Weapon and Tactics team (SWAT)

However, the youths have continued with the protests saying they would not back down until the Government begins implementing the proposed reforms.

In a statement released by the FCT administration on Thursday, October 15, 2020, the security committee claimed that the protests are violating the COVID-19 guidelines.

The resolutions of the meeting were contained in a statement titled,’COVID-19: FCT Security Committee prohibits street demonstrations,’ signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT minister, Anthony Ogunleye.

The statement read, “While the committee recognizes the rights of citizens as regards freedom of association and movement as enshrined in the constitution, it has observed that the unruly conduct of the crowd and manner of demonstrations are in complete violation of the COVID-19 safety protocols which were put in place to safeguard the lives of citizens.

“These violations endanger the lives of not just the demonstrators, but also other citizens going about their legitimate concerns.”

Reacting to this, Nigerian Singer, David Adeleke, faulted the decision of the FCTA, noting that the Federal Government allowed elections and rallies to hold in Ondo and Edo States where cases of violation of COVID-19 protocol were recorded.
