FG Declares December 25, 26 and January 1 Public Holidays for Festive Season

The Federal Government has announced Thursday, December 25; Friday, December 26, 2025; and Thursday, January 1, 2026 as public holidays in celebration of Christmas, Boxing Day, and the New Year.

The declaration was conveyed in a statement released on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The minister encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the enduring virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice symbolised by the birth of Jesus Christ. He also called on citizens, irrespective of religious or ethnic background, to use the festive period as a time to pray for national peace, improved security, and socio-economic progress.

Tunji-Ojo urged the public to support government initiatives aimed at strengthening unity and national development, while advising citizens to remain law-abiding and vigilant throughout the celebrations.

He noted that the Christmas and New Year festivities offer an opportunity for Nigerians to deepen social bonds, demonstrate compassion, and recommit to the collective task of nation-building.

The minister further appealed for moderation in celebrations and cooperation with security agencies to ensure a peaceful holiday period, while extending his Christmas and New Year greetings to Nigerians across the country.
