Governor Okpebholo: I Bought My Own Office Chair After Obaseki Took His
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has revealed that he personally purchased his office chair after his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, left with the one bearing Nigeria’s Coat of Arms.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, on Thursday evening, Okpebholo explained that while he would not personally initiate a probe into Obaseki’s administration, the system would eventually investigate financial matters and recover any misappropriated funds.
“I am not the one probing them. The system will probe them. So much money is tied to different things, and when the time comes, those funds will be uncovered. I’m not going to hide anything,” he stated.
Obaseki Took Office Chair, Governor Claims
Recounting his experience after assuming office, Okpebholo disclosed that he had to buy his own chair because Obaseki took the previous one.
“Even when I entered government, I had to use my money to buy my seat. Obaseki took his seat—the chair with the Nigerian Coat of Arms. Somebody who can take an office chair, tell me what he will not take,” he said.
Electoral Victory & Divine Intervention
Okpebholo, who won the September 22, 2024 governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 291,667 votes, defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who polled 247,655 votes.
Attributing his victory to divine intervention, he insisted that he would still win again, even in 20 years.
“Can you even point out one godfather who was pushing me?” he asked, dismissing claims of political backing.
“God was using people to support me. Edo people spoke. We were hungry for change. Even in the next 20 years, I will win.”
He recalled his Senate victory, emphasizing that despite facing obstacles such as lack of water, electricity, roads, fuel, and financial support, he still triumphed over the PDP, which was seen as more favored at the time.
