GOVERNOR YAHAYA BELLO CALLS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NIGERIAN AIR FORCE BASE IN KOGI STATE

The Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has called for the establishment of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Kogi State.

The Governor gave the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao at the NAF Headquarters.

Governor Bello said the establishment of an air force base in the State would curtail the activities of bandits as well as enhance intelligence gathering against criminals in the State.

He revealed that the State Government had approached the NAF in 2017 with a view to setting up a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at a colonial-era airstrip in Zariagi near Lokoja, to which the NAF in 2018.

Governor Bello stated that there was a need to revisit the matter following a surge in activities by bandits and other criminal elements in the State.

He further said that bandits fleeing from the intense firepower of the military in the Northeast and Northwest have regrouped in locations between Lokoja and Kabba/Bunu. According to him, residents in these areas have fled to other states due to the threats posed by these criminal elements.

The Kogi State Governor had earlier applauded the Chief of Air Staff for his steadfastness towards tackling insurgency and terrorism, and also securing Kogi State.

Governor Bello, who revealed that these assailants have become mobile and are quick to migrate to another location once security operatives spot them, assured that all criminal elements would be flushed out in no time.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Amao, commenting on the FOB establishment, assured Governor Bello that a team would be set up to review the report submitted in 2018 to reactivate the establishment plans.
