IGP Disu vows intensified security in Benue, seeks stronger collaboration to tackle farmer-herder conflict
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Riliwan Disu has pledged intensified security measures in Benue State as part of renewed efforts to address the lingering farmer-herder conflict and other security challenges affecting the state.
The assurance came during the IGP's official working visit to Governor Hyacinth Alia in Makurdi, where he held a high-level strategic meeting with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women representatives, as well as members of various farmers' associations.
Addressing the gathering, IGP Disu identified the proliferation of sophisticated firearms as a major driver of recurring violence across local communities. He stressed that effective intelligence gathering and community cooperation remain critical to restoring lasting peace.
The police chief urged residents, particularly youths, to promptly report suspicious activities, assuring that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality. He also called for closer collaboration between conventional security agencies and local security outfits, describing security as a collective responsibility.
Governor Hyacinth Alia commended the IGP for conducting a firsthand assessment of the state's security situation, describing the visit as a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to improving safety under his leadership.
The governor reaffirmed his administration's support for security agencies, stating that ensuring a safe environment where residents can live, work and farm without fear remains a top priority. He also praised the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. Nwadiogbu, for his efforts in combating crime and strengthening police-community relations.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to sustaining professional, intelligence-led policing and safeguarding lives and property across the country.
