INCREASED MENANCE OF TANKER ACCIDENTS AS 42 PERSONS ESCAPE DEATH IN ANAMBRA
42 persons on Tuesday again narrowly escaped being crushed in Anambra In what has become an increased menace of tanker accidents and deaths on Nigerian roads.
Statistics released by the Nigerian Road Safety Commission have revealed that the number of tanker accidents and deaths on Nigerian roads has increased drastically over the past year.
In January 2023 alone, the number of tanker accidents and deaths rose by a staggering 34% compared to the same period in 2020. The figures show that out of the 1,325 fatalities on Nigerian roads in January 2023, 732 were due to tanker accidents. This is significantly higher than the 545 deaths reported in January 2020.
The rise in tanker accidents and deaths is being attributed to a number of factors, including a lack of adequate safety regulations and a disregard for traffic laws. Poor road infrastructure, inadequate training for tanker drivers, and the use of unsafe vehicles are also contributing to the increase.
The Nigerian Road Safety Commission has called on the federal government to take urgent action to address the issue. The commission has urged the government to implement stricter safety standards for tanker drivers and vehicles, improve the road infrastructure, and enforce tougher penalties for those who violate traffic laws.
It is hoped that the government will take quick action to address this critical issue before the number of tanker accidents and deaths becomes even more alarming. Until then, all road users are urged to take extra caution on Nigerian roads, especially while driving around articulated vehicles.
This comes to the fore as two tanker accidents were reported on Tuesday, 31 January 2023. While the Lagos incident around Ikotun involved a PMS-loaded vehicle ramming into 3 tricycles due to brake failure, killing 2 persons and leaving several others including 2 pregnant women in a state of trauma. The second incident occurred around Umuokpu road in Anambra happened when a tipper rammed into a bus with the inscription: Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.
