ISWAP attack on Monguno school leaves students dead as troops foil mass abduction, rescue 46
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), supported by personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), have foiled an attempted mass abduction by suspected ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State, rescuing 46 students.
The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, 19 July 2026, at the school, which is currently serving as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno.
According to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, the terrorists allegedly gained access to the facility with the assistance of suspected collaborators before launching the attack.
Security personnel on duty immediately engaged the attackers in a gun battle, while the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) swiftly reinforced the location.
The coordinated response forced the terrorists to abandon the attempted abduction and flee without taking any of the students.
However, some students were killed after being hit by indiscriminate gunfire during the exchange of fire.
The military said all 46 students were successfully rescued and evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they received medical attention and were confirmed to be in stable condition.
Investigations are ongoing to identify those who may have aided the attackers and strengthen security around vulnerable facilities in the area.
