Kano TikToker, Musician Sentenced for Naira Abuse

Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court sitting in Kano has convicted and sentenced a TikToker, Abubakar Ibrahim (popularly known as G-Fresh), and a musician, Hamisu Sa'id Yusuf (a.k.a. Hamisu Breaker), for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

The duo were arraigned by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on one-count charges each, bordering on the abuse of Naira notes. Their actions contravened Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007.

According to the charge, Abubakar Ibrahim, in November 2024, at Rahma Sa’idu’s shop in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, was seen spraying and stepping on N14,000 worth of N1000 denomination notes while dancing.

Similarly, Hamisu Sa’id Yusuf was accused of spraying N30,000 in N200 denominations during a social event held in Hadejia, Jigawa State, also in November 2024.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to them.

Following their pleas and the evidence presented by EFCC counsel, Zarami Mohammed, Justice Shuaibu found them guilty as charged. He subsequently sentenced each of them to five months imprisonment with an option of a N200,000 fine.

Their prosecution followed videos showing them spraying Naira notes during social events, a practice prohibited by law.
