MALI CNSP MILITARY JUNTA APPOINTS TRANSITIONAL PRESIDENT
Mali military junta which took over power in August on Monday appointed former minister of defence Bah Ndaw as transitional President.
Ndaw is expected to serve as Mali's Head of State for a few months before organising an election that would determine the Sahel country's new President.
One of the key leaders of the August 18 military Putsch, Colonel Assimi Goïta, would be serving as Ndaw's Vice President.
The announcement comes at a time the Military Junta are under pressure by ECOWAS to transition power to a civilian.
ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Mali following the August coup which led to the arrest and resignation of former President Boubacar Keïta.
Several deliberations later, ECOWAS agreed to lift sanctions only when the military junta handover power to a transitional president.
The transitional President is expected to rule for less than 2 years, and then organise an election which he cannot participate in as a candidate.
