National Security: Nigeria Police Reactivates Digital Tinted Glass Permit System

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the reactivation of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system nationwide through a newly enhanced, secure, and user-friendly digital platform accessible via possap.gov.ng. The move, approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, comes in response to widespread public complaints over police harassment of motorists using factory-fitted tinted windows.

This initiative aims to provide a transparent, standardized, and accountable process for regularizing the use of tinted vehicle glass while addressing national security concerns. Given that modern vehicles are increasingly manufactured with tinted windows, the Police Force seeks to balance convenience with safety by ensuring only legitimate users—such as individuals with medical exemptions or verified security personnel—are granted permits.

The use of tinted vehicles has been linked to various criminal activities including kidnapping, armed robbery, "one-chance" scams, and other forms of banditry. According to the Force, such vehicles hinder visibility and obstruct effective law enforcement, thereby posing significant threats to public safety.

Under the reactivated system, applicants can now process their permits online. The application process integrates identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric capture and thorough background checks. The system also issues QR-coded digital permits, and the processing period has been streamlined to 72 hours.

To facilitate a seamless transition, the Police have approved a 30-day grace period starting from May 1, 2025, during which motorists are expected to regularize their tinted glass usage. Enforcement will commence after the expiration of the grace period. The Force also warned that officers found engaging in extortion or harassment during enforcement will be sanctioned in line with existing disciplinary procedures.

Inspector-General Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force's commitment to a technologically driven, citizen-oriented policing strategy. He urged Nigerians to embrace the initiative for safer roads, improved public confidence, and enhanced national security.
