EDO MUST ERADICATE TWO EVILS: GODFATHERISM AND CONSENSUS CANDIDATE- OBA OF BENIN
The Oba of Benin has called on Edo politicians to eradicate what he calls "the twin evil political vices of Godfatherism and Consensus candidate."
The Oba made this call through a palace press release signed on Thursday, June 18.
According to the press release, the Palace of the Oba of Benin does not get involved in partisan politics.
The monarch, therefore, denounced rumours speculating that he prevailed on some gubernatorial aspirants to step down for a particular candidate and strongly condemned those that originated it.
According to the statement, the Oba of Benin's three prayer points are:
"That God and our ancestors should give us a governor that will accord respect to our traditional institutions, develop this state, and provide food on the table for the masses."
His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, strongly advised that politicians should desist from coercing aspirants to step down for someone else. The Oba termed it as "undemocratic," stating that every aspirant must be given a level playing field.
The monarch urged the various political parties to go about selecting their gubernatorial candidate with the highest standard of maturity and sportsmanship while warning rumour mongers that there is an ancestral curse on anyone who attempts to tarnish the image of the Oba of Benin and the ancient throne of the Benin Kingdom.
