NIGERIA AND AFGHANISTAN RECORD HIGHEST DEATHS FROM TERRORISM IN 2019- GLOBAL TERRORISM INDEX
A recent report from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) indicates that Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries with a record of over 1,000 terrorism-related deaths.
The Global Terrorism Index uses data from the Global Terrorism Database and other sources to collate terrorist incidents across the globe.
In its recent report which details the global trends on terrorism in 2019, the GTI reveals that despite Afghanistan and Nigeria being the only countries with over 1000 records of deaths, they have also recorded the largest reduction in Terrorism related deaths.
Afghanistan, which overtook Iraq as the country most impacted by terrorism, recorded 1,654 fewer deaths from 2018- a 22 percent decrease from the previous year
The GTI report says deaths from terrorism fell for the fifth consecutive time in 2019 with Nigeria recording the second largest reduction.
Records of deaths from Terrorism reduced from 2,043 to 1,245 mainly due to reduced killings from Fulani Herdsmen but there was an increase in Boko Haram related killings, the report said.
The 2019 report indicates that deaths from Terrorism is now 83 percent lower than at their peak in 2014.
Deaths from ISIL has also further declined to 942 in 2019 from 1571 in the year 2018.
A significant fall in the number of deaths attributed to ISIL indicates a steady decline in the Islamist terror group's strength and influence.
However, while there has been a decrease in ISIL activities in the Middle East and North Africa, there has been an expansion of ISIL affiliates in Sub Saharan Africa which has led to a surge in terrorist activities in many countries in the region.
Some of the most affected Sub Saharan countries include Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mali, Niger, Cameroon, and Ethiopia.
