NIGERIA ARMY SET TO INVESTIGATE ALL CASES OF POLICE BRUTALITY AGAINST ITS SOLDIERS SINCE 2019

The Nigeria Army is set to conduct an investigation into all cases of Police brutality against its Soldiers from 2019 to date.

This information is contained in a statement signed by Maj. Gen. J.A Ataguba on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Farouk Yahaya.

The Army said the investigation has become necessary judging by the increasing rate at which its Soldiers are constantly brutalised and sometimes killed in the line of duty by Policemen, even after identifying themselves as personnels of the Nigeria Army.

The Army authorities stated that the investigation is to evaluate the occurrences with a view to establishing the frequency and recommend possible remedial measures to stem the tide.

"Joint operations create occasions for the Nigeria Police to equate its hierarchy with the Nigeria Army and this has often led to friction, especially at the lower levels. This friction has occasionally led to bodily harm and in some cases, death of our troops".

"Consequently, all Nigeria Army formations and establishments are please requested to forward all known cases of Police brutality against personnels of the Nigera Army. The report should cover the last two years", the statement read in part.

Deadline for submission of the investigation from various formations to the Defence Headquarters is December 8th, 2021.
