Nigerian Army Warns Public Against Fake Social Media Accounts Linked to Chief of Army Staff

The Nigerian Army has issued a public alert over the growing presence of fake social media accounts falsely claiming to represent or be associated with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

In a statement released on January 9, 2026, the Army clarified that the Chief of Army Staff does not operate or maintain any official social media account on any platform. It described the fake accounts as the handiwork of unscrupulous individuals seeking to deceive members of the public.

The Army cautioned citizens to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with such accounts, noting that they are often used to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit funds, or spread misinformation in the name of the COAS or the Nigerian Army. Members of the public were advised not to respond to, interact with, or share content from these accounts.

According to the statement, the Nigerian Army has commenced necessary actions to identify and apprehend those behind the fake accounts, with the aim of prosecuting them in line with existing laws.

The Army also reassured Nigerians of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the territorial integrity of the country, as provided for in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The statement was signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations.
