ONDO INEC FIRE: BURNT SMART CARD READERS WOULD NOT DETER ELECTIONS- INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said Thursday’s fire which burnt over 5,000 smart card readers would not stop the Ondo State’s scheduled elections.

Recall, Eons Intelligence reported that fire gutted the Ondo State INEC’s head office at about 7.30 pm on Thursday, September 10.

The fire destroyed 5,141 card readers, just a month to the State’s governorship election.

INEC however, has reassured the people that the incident would not stop the Ondo State election scheduled to hold on October 10.

Speaking to Premium Times, INEC’s National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye said the electoral commission would use smart card readers from other states.

“Since it is one month to the election, we will just take smart card readers from other states to replace the burnt one so that the election won’t be affected. So, rest assured that it will not affect the conduct of the election,” Okoye told Premium Times.

INEC in a statement released on Thursday said it will promptly investigate the cause of the fire.
