UPDATE: ORJI KALU REGAINS FREEDOM
Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has regained his freedom after his release from the Kuje Custodian Centre by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOS).
The spokesman of the NCOS, Austin Njoku, confirmed the development.
Njoku said the former Governor was freed at 5.05pm yesterday.
“Ex-governor Orji Kalu was released from custody at exactly 5:05 pm on Wednesday. He was discharged after we received the court warrant on his release,” he said.
Recall that Orji Kalu was sentenced to jail for 12 years on December 5th, 2019, after he was convicted of N7.1 billion fraud alongside former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu.
Eons Intelligence reported that the Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the release of Kalu on Tuesday, June 2.
According to Justice Mohammed who presided over the proceedings, Senator Orji’s release became necessary since the Supreme court on May 8th, nullified his sentence.
