Oyo Govt Probes Fatal Carnival Stampede, Holds Organizers Accountable
The Oyo State Government has launched an investigation into a tragic stampede that occurred during a carnival in Ibadan, resulting in the loss of multiple lives, including children. Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and pledged swift action to hold those responsible accountable.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, the governor confirmed that the organisers of the event have been apprehended and assured the public of thorough investigations.
“The primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede are now in custody,” Makinde said. “I want to assure our people that anyone directly or indirectly connected to this tragedy will face justice. Please remain calm as security agencies carry out their investigations.”
He extended heartfelt sympathy to the affected families, saying, “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones impacted by this heartbreaking incident. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
Though the exact number of casualties has not been confirmed, viral videos from the incident, which occurred at Islamic High School in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, depicted scenes of children affected by the stampede.
Describing it as a somber day for Oyo State, Governor Makinde assured residents that immediate measures were being taken to prevent further harm. Security agents have been deployed to restore order, and medical personnel, along with ambulances, have been dispatched to assist the injured.
“Earlier today, a tragic stampede occurred at a family event held at Islamic High School, Basorun, leading to a devastating loss of lives and injuries. This is an incredibly sad day for us in Oyo State. We extend our deepest condolences to parents who have tragically lost their children,” Makinde said.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring safety at the venue and emphasized ongoing efforts to secure the area and provide medical support to those affected.
