Police Recover 1,519 Stolen Vehicles, Pledge Stronger ICT-Driven Crime Control
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reiterated its commitment to leveraging electronic and ICT-driven strategies to combat crime and enhance public safety. As part of these efforts, the Force has continued to deploy digital policing solutions, including the Police Rescue Me App, the Police VGS Emergency App, and the reactivated Central Motor Registry Portal (e-CMR). These initiatives are aimed at strengthening law enforcement capabilities, particularly in addressing vehicle-related crimes across the country.
According to recent data, the NPF successfully recovered 1,519 stolen vehicles in the past year, with an additional 52 recovered in January 2025 alone. The e-CMR portal has played a significant role in these recoveries, enabling instant reporting of stolen vehicles and facilitating investigations. So far, over 400,000 vehicles have been registered in the national database, while 1,011 stolen vehicles have been reported on the platform. In October 2024, three stolen vehicles flagged on the e-CMR platform were recovered in different locations, with one returned to its owner at the Force Headquarters. Recently, two stolen vehicles were also recovered in Kano State, while 5,877 vehicles with conflicting information are currently under investigation.
Highlighting a recent breakthrough, the IGP disclosed that the Police recovered a Toyota Highlander stolen in 2021. The vehicle was flagged through the e-CMR system when a buyer in Kano attempted to register it. Further investigations led to its recovery in Enugu State, and the rightful owner has since been invited to reclaim it. The seller and buyer involved in the transaction are set to face legal proceedings.
To further enhance public access to vehicle verification services, the NPF is developing a USSD-based module for easy status checks, pending integration with mobile telecom operators. Citizens are encouraged to register their vehicles with the Nigeria Police through https://cmris.npf.gov.ng and report stolen vehicles via https://reportcmr.npf.gov.ng.
The IGP reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to fight crime, urging Nigerians to take advantage of these digital solutions and report any suspicious activities to aid law enforcement efforts.
