Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command has dismantled an illegal firearms manufacturing workshop and arrested seven suspects in a targeted operation across several parts of the state.

The coordinated raids, which took place between June 15 and 21, were carried out by tactical units including the Anti-Cultism Squad, SWAT, and Operation Octopus. The operations focused on criminal hideouts in Enugu North, Nkanu West, and the 9th Mile axis.

Among those arrested was a 22-year-old suspected gunsmith believed to be responsible for repairing and supplying firearms to cult groups such as the Supreme Vikings and Black Axe confraternities.

Items recovered during the operation include:

Several locally fabricated pistols

Cut-to-size single and double-barrel shotguns

A Beretta-style pistol

Live and expended ammunition

Tools and equipment used for firearm production and repairs

One of the suspects, identified as Yusuf John, was caught in possession of a cut-to-size firearm in the 9th Mile area. Other suspects led officers to various locations where illegal arms were being produced or maintained.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for acting swiftly on actionable intelligence. He reiterated the command’s commitment to flushing out armed groups and eliminating illegal weapons from circulation in the state.

The suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
