Release Our Children: Kano Parents Rally Against Detention of Youths Arrested During August Protests
Parents of youths arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests gathered at the Kano State House of Assembly, demanding justice and the immediate release of their children.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Malam Nura Ahmad revealed that around 70 youths were arrested and transferred to Abuja, where they are reportedly being subjected to harsh conditions.
The protests, held nationwide from August 1 to 10, aimed to express frustration over the economic hardships under President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Ahmad raised concerns about the inhumane treatment of the detainees, stating that they have not been allowed to bathe since their arrest and are being fed only once a day. The parents voiced their frustration over the stalled efforts to secure bail, lamenting that every attempt had been blocked.
They also reported that the youths had been denied access to legal representation, adding to their distress. Fatima Yusuf Umar, one of the mothers, shared her anguish, recounting a recent conversation with her son, who said he was struggling to see properly due to the harsh treatment he was enduring.
In response, the Majority Leader of the State Assembly, who met with the parents, assured them that steps would be taken to facilitate bail for the detainees. He also called on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to intervene and ensure that the youths are granted bail.
