RESTRUCTURING: PRESIDENT BUHARI WOULD NOT TAKE ANY DECISION AGAINST THE INTERESTS OF 200 MILLION NIGERIANS – PRESIDENCY

President Muhammadu Buhari would not take any decision against the interests of 200 million Nigerians, the Presidency announced on Sunday evening.

This comes amid calls from persons, religious leaders, and groups clamoring for the Federal Government to restructure Nigeria.

Recall that Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor, and former interim Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), called for the restructuring of Nigeria, stating that Yoruba people would be in bloody war for hundred years if Nigeria breaks up.

Also, in April 2020, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a chieftain of the Afenifere group, urged the Federal Government to restructure the country.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had on Saturday admonished the Federal Government to urgently restructure the country to save it from breakup.

It is pertinent to mention that the OODUA Republic Agitators and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on July 21, 2020, and September 26, 2020 respectively, vowed to secede and set up their own new nation over marginalization, oppression and rights violations.

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, who described such calls as unwarranted and unpatriotic, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday night, October 4, 2020.

The President’s SSA described such calls as ‘recurring threats to the corporate existence of the country’.

He said; “The Presidency responds to the recurring threats to the corporate existence of the country with factions giving specific timelines for the President to do one thing or another or else, in their language, ‘the nation will break up’.

“This administration will not take any decision against the interests of 200 million Nigerians, who are the President’s first responsibility under the constitution, out of fear or threats especially in this hour of a health crisis.”

Shehu stated that such unpatriotic outbursts are both unhelpful and unwarranted as this Government will not succumb to threats and take any decision out of pressure at a time when the nation’s full attention is needed to deal with the security challenges facing the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Presidential spokesman added that the President would continue to work with patriotic Nigerians in line with parliamentary processes to finding solutions to the challenges of the country.
