TENSION AS GUNMEN ATTACK ENUGU COMMUNITY, KILL TOWN VICE-CHAIRMAN AND SET OVER 70 BUILDINGS ABLAZE

There was tension in Oruku community, Nkanu East Local Government council in Enugu State on Wednesday as gunmen killed the town's Vice-Chairman, Chief Samuel Ani, and set over 70 buildings ablaze.

A community leader, Mr Agozie Anih, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said Chief Ani was shot and killed after the gunmen invaded his residence on Wednesday morning.

He stated that the gunmen then proceeded to setting houses ablaze in the community before fleeing.

Commissioner of Police in Enugu state, Mohammed Aliyu, said security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore calm and normalcy.

It is pertinent to mention that this incident is the third in Oruku community since December 2020.

Recall that on December 26, 2020, gunmen in police uniforms had stormed the town union meeting and killed the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Emmanuel Mba, and also inflicting injuries on scores of residents.

Igwe Mba, whose remains is still at the mortuary, was murdered while addressing the annual general meeting of the community.

In January 2021, few weeks after the Traditional ruler was murdered, gunmen invaded the community and shot sporadically at defenceless residents, leaving many dead and several injured. It was gathered that many residents fled the community after that attack.

It is pertinent for Authorities to wade into this crisis and ensure these incessant attacks are stopped. The security apparatus in the community should also be improved upon and it is important that residents provide timely useful Intel once the assailants are spotted regrouping.
