Tinubu Congratulates Ghana’s President-elect Mahama, Commends Democratic Values
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, while commending the people of Ghana for their unwavering commitment to democracy.
Tinubu's message came following Mahama's victory in Ghana’s December 7 general election and his opponent’s concession speech. The congratulatory remarks were conveyed during a telephone call to Mahama, according to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
President Tinubu expressed hope that Mahama’s return to office for a second term would enhance stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Tinubu currently serves as chairman.
He praised Ghanaians for their peaceful and successful conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections, highlighting their demonstration of democracy as the preferred path for achieving political stability, economic progress, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa.
“President Tinubu affirmed Nigeria's and the region’s shared belief in the principles of the people’s right to freely choose their leaders, emphasizing that this remains a source of pride,” the statement read.
Additionally, Tinubu commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), for graciously conceding defeat before the official declaration by Ghana’s Electoral Commission. He described this act as a reinforcement of Ghana’s strong democratic ethos.
Tinubu’s remarks underscore his commitment to fostering democratic values and regional stability in West Africa.
