Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant, told the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to quarantine Governor Godwin Obaseki and his supporters for violating the physical distancing guidelines. 

Governor Obaseki, on Friday, June 19, was accompanied by a massive crowd where he collected his Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) membership card at the party secretariat in Benin. 

Ize-Iyamu's reaction was in response to the videos that showed that Obaseki and his supporters did not obey NCDC's physical distancing guidelines at the PDP secretariat on Friday.

John Mayaki, the campaign spokesman of Ize-Iyamu, in a statement, said, "We observed with great concern the dangerous and reckless actions of the Governor and his supporters at the venue of his defection.

"Mr Godwin Obaseki assembled hundreds of Edo youths that his administration failed to gainfully engage following his failure to create 200,000 jobs as promised and assigned them the demeaning task of singing his praises at great risk to their health during a pandemic.

"Apart from violating the guidelines of the Presidential Task-Force on COVID-19 on social gathering, Obaseki also openly disregarded the stipulations of his ill-conceived gazette which, among other things.

"We call on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to aid the NCDC in the commencement of an immediate identification, tracing, and arrest of everyone present at the event for immediate quarantine at nearby isolation centres."

Meanwhile, reports say Governor Obaseki is currently in Abuja for screening ahead of the governorship election. 

According to Col. Austin Akobundu, the PDP's national organising secretary, the screening exercise for the primary election will be conducted on Saturday, June 20, at the Party's National Working Committee (NWC) hall, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP granted a waiver to Governor Obaseki to contest the Edo governorship election primary. 

According to the Party, the action of the NWC is under Section 29(2)(b) of the Party's constitution and in the exercise of the powers of the National Executive Committee (NEC) under Section (50)(3)(b) of the PDP constitution.

Also, the NWC had postponed the Edo State governorship primary from an earlier slated date of Tuesday, June 23 to Thursday, June 25, 2020.
