CUSTOMS SEIZE 15,449 LITRES OF PMS, OTHERS WORTH OVER N13 MILLION IN ADAMAWA
The Customs Area Controller, Adamawa/Taraba area Command, Comptroller Salisu Abdullahi, said the command had recorded 19 seizures of assorted items such as15,449 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with a cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N13,749,110.35.
He stated this during a press briefing held on 17 November 2023 at The headquarters of the Area Command in Yola.
Other seized items are 19 cartons of foreign insecticide and 26 x 50kg bags of foreign parboiled rice.
The Comptroller said on account of the flammability of the PMS, most of the product had been disposed of in accordance with the extant laws and the accrued proceeds remitted into the Federation Account.
He said the fraction of the PMS remaining on the ground will also be auctioned immediately after the briefing. “The seizure of the PMS is on the account of the contravention of section 246 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and considering the facts that the territorial borders of the Command remain officially closed”, he stated.
Comptroller Abdullahi said the command didn’t apprehend any of the smugglers as they all took to their heels. However, he vowed to clamp down on all smugglers, maintaining that the Nation cannot afford to allow saboteurs to take over the Nation's economy.
He called on Nigerians, stakeholders and all relevant security agencies at the Command's frontiers to continue collaborating with the Customs in the battle against this menace of smuggling, as this fight is not a one-person business.
While commending the officers and Men of the Command for their continued efforts in the fight against smugglers, he thanked the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi (MFR), and his Management Team for
providing the Command with additional operational vehicles.
“The presence of these vehicles had strengthened the efforts of the operatives in the area of combating the smuggling activities more effectively in the command and had yielded great success in terms of the seizures recorded in the period under review,” he noted.
