SOUTHWEST GOVERNORS AND MONARCHS BACK SOCIAL MEDIA REGULATION
Governors and monarchs in the South-West region, on Sunday, called on the Federal Government to ensure the regulation of social media.
In a 13-point communique signed by Governor Akeredolu and the Ooni of Ife after a meeting of the governors, traditional rulers and a Presidential delegation in Lagos on Sunday, November 8, the South-West leaders decried the damaging impact of fake news and called on the federal government to use the instrumentality of existing laws and those regulations bench-marked from other countries to provide safeguards against the spread of fake news, adding that the 2015 Cyber Act must be fully put into effect.
The six southwest governors present at the meeting are Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, and Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State.
Also present at the meeting are President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. Also, all serving members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) from the region and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu, attended the event held at the Banquet Hall in the State House, Alausa.
Recall that Eons Intelligence reported that Governors of the Northern States on Monday, November 3 asked the Nigerian Government to censor social media to curb the spread of ‘fake news’ after the violence that followed the #endsars protest.
