17 KILLED AS EXPLOSION ROCKS GHANA COMMUNITY
Not less than 17 persons have been confirmed dead while 59 sustained injuries in an explosion in Western Ghana, Authorities have confirmed.
The inferno occurred after a truck carrying explosives intended for a mine collided with a motorcycle, leaving dozens of buildings razed and many dead.
The incident occurred near the city of Bogoso some 300 kilometres (180 miles) west of the mineral-rich West African country’s capital Accra.
“A total of 17 people have unfortunately been confirmed dead, and 59 injured people have been rescued.
"Out of 59 people injured, 42 are receiving treatment in hospitals or health centres and some are in critical condition”, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said in a statement released overnight.
Reacting to the incident, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who described it as “truly sad, unfortunate and tragic", also expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased.
