FG Launches Phase 7 of Kainji Trials for Terrorism Suspects
The Federal Government has commenced Phase 7 of the Kainji Mass Trials involving individuals suspected of terrorism, reaffirming its commitment to combating violent extremism and upholding justice in accordance with global legal standards.
The flag-off ceremony, held on Wednesday, was led by Major General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He described the trials as a significant step in Nigeria’s lawful and transparent efforts to address terrorism and reinforce the rule of law.
“It is encouraging to witness the judiciary, law enforcement, and legal practitioners united once again in a common cause,” General Laka stated. “These trials are critical to our national objective of tackling terrorism within the bounds of justice.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s improved capacity to prosecute terrorism-related offences and noted the impact these efforts have had on addressing concerns from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), particularly in advancing the country’s path toward exiting the FATF Grey List.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, General Laka expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Federal High Court for their professionalism. He also acknowledged the contributions of international partners, investigators, legal teams, and administrative staff involved in the trials.
Representing the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, praised the collaborative support from both local and global stakeholders.
He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to ensure justice for victims and fair treatment for the accused, maintaining strict adherence to human rights and legal procedures.
