FG SETS TO BEGIN SCHOOL HOME FEEDING OF 337,589 HOUSEHOLDS IN LAGOS

Federal Government will begin the modified school feeding programme in Lagos and no fewer than 337,589 persons will benefit from the programme, said Minister of Humanitarian Affairs

Hajia Sadiya Umar, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, who was represented by the Director, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, Mrs Margaret Ukegbu made this known during the inauguration of the school feeding programme in Lagos on Thursday, May 21.

Ukegbu said, 337,587 individuals, which consist of parents, guardians and caregivers of primary school children will benefit from the programme.

Items to be distributed to each household are 5kg bag of rice, 5 kg bag of beans, vegetable and palm oil, salt, tomato paste and 15 pieces of eggs.

According to her, the nutritional values of the food items have been ascertained by nutritional experts.

The programme was organised to cushion the effect of the ban on schools as pupils are at home depending on parents for primary needs.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo speaking on the development said the programme is an applaudable development, adding that it is a continuation of the existing homegrown feeding programme of the State Government.

She reiterated the importance of good food in the development and growth of a child.

"When a child is growing up, it's quite imperative that a child should have a good, quality, balanced diet to ensure the brain grows appropriately".

Adefisayo added that the intake of good food helps a child to learn properly.
