Fire Guts Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Office in Lagos, Destroys Property

A fire broke out Wednesday evening at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) office in Ikoyi, Lagos State, causing extensive damage to the property, including its studio section.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported being alerted to the incident at approximately 5:30 p.m., with firefighters from Dolphin and Ebute Elefun stations responding promptly. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) also deployed its Shark Response Team from Lekki to assist.

Upon arrival at 6:33 p.m., responders discovered that a two-story and a one-story building, housing control rooms, music studios, and radio studios, were engulfed in flames. According to LASEMA’s investigations, the fire began in an air conditioning unit before spreading to adjacent structures.

“The fire was swiftly combated by emergency responders at the scene. Valuable properties were salvaged during the recovery operation, although the fire significantly affected three studios,” Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Director-General of LASEMA, said in a statement. He added that the roofs of the buildings were severely damaged, with several offices also impacted.

While the fire caused substantial property loss, emergency responders managed to prevent the destruction of additional assets. The exact cause of the air conditioner malfunction that triggered the blaze is under investigation.
