LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT RESCUES MAN WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE ON THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE, PAYS HIS DEBT OF N500,000
The Lagos State Government has rescued a man who attempted committing suicide by jumping into the Lagoon of the Third Mainland Bridge.
According to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the man, Adeyinka Abiodun, wanted to jump into the Lagoon over a debt of N500,000.
"Earlier in the morning, we rescued somebody who was planning to jump into the Lagoon at the Third Mainland Bridge because he had a debt of N500,000. We rescued him and paid the debt. These details are what makes the difference.
"We need to always show the humane side of us while not losing sight of the big picture. Yes, we want to build roads, bridges and schools but we certainly need to create time for the little things as well," Governor Sanwo-Olu tweeted.
Abiodun, who lives in the Ikotun area of Lagos, was intercepted by police operatives deployed in the Third Mainland Bridge.
Bala Elkana, Lagos State police spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
He revealed the suicide attempt was intercepted by the security operatives at about 1.50pm on Friday last week while the victim was rescued and taken to the Police Station in Bariga for questioning and debriefing.
According to the spokesperson, Abiodun narrated that he procured a loan of N390,000 in March with monthly repayment plan for six months and accrued interest of N142, 287 from a microfinance Bank in Lagos Island.

Abiodun's hope for a second chance later came into reality when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was moved to compassion, came to his rescue, by repaying the loan.
The Police spokesperson said Elkana holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a Master's degree in Business Administration.
He is currently attending medical and counselling sessions.
