NIGERIA RECORDS 1,964 NEW CASES OF COVID-19, HIGHEST DAILY SURGE

Nigeria recorded 1,964 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, 21st January – its highest ever daily surge, surpassing its previous record of 1,664 daily infections reported on 6th January.


The latest report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) shows that the total COVID-19 cases in the country have increased to 116,655.


Of the 1,964 new Infections, 824 were discovered in Lagos, 246 in the FCT, and 166 in Plateau.


Others are: Kaduna (128), Ogun (76), Nasarawa (74), Anambra (69), Edo (50), Rivers (45), Ondo (44), Niger (40), Oyo (38), Adamawa (35), Kano (31), Akwa Ibom (27), Gombe (19), Kwara (13), Ekiti (12), Delta (6), Kebbi (6), Bauchi (5), Ebonyi (4), Osun (3), and Zamfara (1).



The deaths from COVID-19 disease in Nigeria have also increased to 1,485 with seven additional deaths reported ON Thursday, according to an update by the NCDC on Thursday night.


Of the 116,665 cases so far, 93,646 patients have been discharged after treatment.


Within the last five days, 65 persons have lost their lives to COVID-19 complications in Nigeria.


On Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 15, 14, 15, and 14 daily deaths were recorded respectively.


Last Friday, Nigeria announced its deadliest day of the pandemic with 23 lives lost - the country’s highest daily fatality toll.


In the past four weeks, there have been over 200 fatalities from COVID-19 complications in Nigeria.


Lagos State being the epicentre of the infection in Nigeria has been topping the chart since the emergence of the virus in March 2020.


The South West State has recorded a total of 43,251 cases, 283 deaths followed by the Federal Capital Territory with 15,271 cases, 118 deaths and 7,124 cases with 52 deaths in Plateau State.


Meanwhile, on Thursday, the federal government approved over N6 billion for the provision of oxygen tanks in 38 places across Nigeria.
