Operation Peace Shield: Troops Arrest Three Suspected Arsonists in Taraba, Prevent Communal Escalation

Troops of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have arrested three individuals suspected of setting a house ablaze in Karim Town, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 2 December 2025, when a residence belonging to a Wurkun community member was allegedly torched. The suspects — identified as Bitrus Ishaya and Mamman Ibrahim from Wudumpi, and Emmanuel Adi from Step 2 — were apprehended at the scene by troops responding swiftly to the attack.

Preliminary findings showed that Bitrus and Mamman falsely claimed to be members of the Taraba Marshal but could not produce any form of identification. Emmanuel Adi, who said he was a vigilante operative, reportedly gave inconsistent statements during questioning. Their contradictory explanations and presence at the scene led to their arrest.

Security sources believe the arson attempt was deliberately intended to inflame existing tensions in parts of Karim Lamido LGA, where recent incidents have raised concerns over potential communal unrest. The prompt intervention of troops prevented the situation from escalating further.

The suspects are currently in military custody as investigations continue to determine their identities, motives, and possible links to criminal groups operating under the guise of vigilante or security outfits.

Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their alertness and professionalism. He reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to maintaining peace and warned that anyone attempting to instigate violence or destabilise communities will face decisive action.

Residents are urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and report suspicious activities to support the ongoing stabilisation efforts under Operation Peace Shield.
