Pope Francis Dies at 88, Days After Easter Sunday Appearance

Pope Francis, renowned for his unwavering advocacy for the poor and efforts to reform the Catholic Church amid significant internal opposition, passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed.

The pontiff died at 7:35 a.m. local time, according to a statement released by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who is responsible for administering the Holy See during the papal interregnum. "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God," the statement read.

Pope Francis' death came just one day after Easter Sunday — the most sacred day in the Christian calendar, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Despite recent health struggles, the Holy Father participated in several Holy Week events and made a public appearance at St. Peter’s Basilica on Easter Sunday, where he greeted crowds with a warm smile.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis had faced a serious health crisis and was hospitalized for five weeks due to double pneumonia. Although discharged last month and reportedly recovering at his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican stated as recently as last week that his condition was improving.

During his final public appearance, the pope delivered the traditional Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, though the Urbi et Orbi message was read on his behalf by an aide. Among his engagements that day was a brief meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who later expressed condolences on social media.

“I was grateful to have seen the pope, though he was obviously very ill,” Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter). “My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.”

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis emerged as a global moral voice, often clashing with political leaders over social justice issues. He was an outspoken critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and remained a staunch advocate for the rights of migrants and refugees.

Seen as a progressive force within the Church, Pope Francis frequently faced criticism from conservative Catholic factions, particularly in the United States, for his inclusive and reformist stance. Nevertheless, his legacy is expected to endure as one of compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to social equity.
