NERC Imposes Fines on Meter Tampering, Bypassing

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced new penalties for customers who tamper with or bypass electricity meters in their premises.

In an order published on its website, NERC authorized electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to impose a N200,000 fine on maximum-demand customers for a first offence and N300,000 for subsequent violations.

For non-maximum demand residential customers, first-time offenders will be fined N100,000, while repeat offenders will pay N150,000.

Reconnection Fees and DisCo Responsibilities

Additionally, NERC set reconnection fees at:

  • N10,000 for non-maximum demand customers
  • N50,000 for maximum demand customers

The Commission also mandated that any DisCo failing to reconnect a customer after payment must compensate the affected customer if reconnection is delayed beyond 48 hours.

“Distribution companies shall be held accountable for compensating customers in cases of unjustifiable disconnection,” NERC stated.

The new measures aim to curb illegal electricity access and ensure fair enforcement of penalties by electricity providers.
