17 Killed in Two Weeks as Boko Haram Launches Fresh Attack on Adamawa Community
At least 17 people have lost their lives over the past two weeks in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, following a series of violent attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.
The most recent assault occurred on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Kopre village, where heavily armed militants ambushed local hunters and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, killing no fewer than 10 individuals. The chairman of Hong Local Government, Usman Wa’anganda, disclosed this during a briefing with journalists in Yola on Monday.
Providing details of the incident, Wa’anganda said the insurgents, riding motorcycles, stormed the border community around 4:00 p.m., overwhelming the village defenders with superior weaponry. He added that several homes were set ablaze during the raid, leaving many residents homeless and deepening the sense of insecurity in the area.
Visibly distressed, the council chairman emphasized the vulnerability of Kopre village, pointing out its proximity to the notorious Sambisa Forest, a longtime stronghold for Boko Haram fighters. "Because Kopre borders Sambisa, the community remains a frequent target for insurgent attacks," Wa’anganda explained.
He criticized the lack of military presence in the area, lamenting that local hunters were left alone to defend the community without adequate support from formal security agencies. "We have no soldiers here. When we call for help, security forces often fail to respond," he said.
While acknowledging the Adamawa State Government’s efforts to strengthen local vigilante groups, Wa’anganda insisted that more robust action was needed. He called for the immediate deployment of a full battalion to the area to enable displaced residents to safely return to their homes and farmlands.
"The current security arrangement is grossly inadequate," he warned. "We urgently need a strong military presence to restore peace and protect our people."
