COURT REFUSES MAINA’S LAWYER REQUEST TO QUIT CASE

The Federal High Court in Abuja has refused the request of Mr Adeola Adedipe, the lawyer representing the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina to withdraw from the ongoing N2bn money laundering case.

Adedipe, who is representing Maina's company Common Input Property and Investment Limited at the ongoing trial for money laundering, told the court that he had earlier filed a notice indicating his intention to withdraw from the case.

The lawyer apologised to the court for being absent from some of the proceedings, stating that his brief has not been perfected as he is yet to be paid.

Responding to Mr Adedipe’s request, the presiding judge Justice Okon Abang said Adedipe’s application could not be granted because the said application was not present in the court's file.

Justice Okon Abang adjourned the case till December 4.

Abdulrasheed Maina is on trial for allegedly laundering about N2 billion. His whereabouts remain unknown, and the court has remanded Senator Ali Ndume who stood surety for the ex pension boss.

The court on Monday ruled that Senator Ndume be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre until he can pay a N500 million bond while Maina's trial would continue in absentia following the November 18 ruling on the case.
