GUNMEN KILL 16 KANO RESIDENTS ON ABUJA-KADUNA HIGHWAY, GANDUJE MOURNS

Gunmen on Wednesday killed 16 Kano residents on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

Several reports say the victims were killed when the Toyota bus conveying them lost control and fell in a ditch after gunmen shot at its tyre.

The deceased who were residents of Dambatta Local Government Area were returning to Kano from a business trip in Abuja.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, Kano state Governor Abdullahi Ganduje through a statement released by his spokesman Abba Anwar described the incident as devastating and frustrating.

The statement reads:

"We were shocked with the bad news of the death of 16 Dambatta indigenes on Abuja-Kaduna highway, who was travelling from Abuja to Kano, as a result of an attack from unidentified gunmen.

"The news is devastating and frustrating. We commiserate with the families of the deceased, the people of Dambatta local government, and the people of Kano state.

"May Allah accept their martyrdom and may He punish all the perpetrators of this heinous act. There is nothing more shocking than this. We urge people to pray fervently for the reposed souls. And we pray that may Allah give their families the fortitude to bear the significant loss.

"On behalf of the government and people of Kano state, I am condoling with the families of the deceased and the people of Dambatta local government, over this tragedy. May Allah forgive all their wrongdoings and reward their good deeds."

However, the Commissioner of Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna, Samuel Aruwan on Thursday denied the report that gunmen killed the Kano residents, insisting that they died from an accident resulting from a burst tyre.

He also sent his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.

The story that 16 indigenes of Kano State were killed by bandits on the Kaduna-Abuja Road is incorrect and misleading.

The fact is, they perished at the Rigachikun axis of Kaduna-Zaria Road in a road accident following a burst tyre.
