INSURGENCY: PRESIDENT BUHARI APPROVES RENEWED MILITARY OPERATIONS IN NIGER STATE

President Muhamadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces has okayed a major military operation in Niger State, in response to continued attacks on its communities by bandits and Boko Haram terrorists who are fleeing from military assaults in the Northwest and Northeast.

The information is contained in a directive available on the defence Headquarters website. The President notably charged the armed forces to also decisively deal with the issues of killings and kidnappings in the State. The President also said the criminals must be dealt enough blows as to disable their operational capabilities.

“I would like to express my sincere sympathies to the Government and people of the State following recent security incidents", Mr President stated.

He said security is a responsibility of every member of the community and only through solidarity and co-operation with law enforcement agencies can we defeat the problems finally. He said the Nigerian Government is willing to strengthen support and co-operation with all the states. He added that he believes with the full co-operation of the citizens, the problem of insecurity will be solved.

The statement was signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu. It was not specific on modalities of the operation. But some security experts are of the opinion that it will likely be an increase in the existing joint operations as it is in other parts of the country.
